Module overview

The ALL7027 Healthcare Innovators Module (also known as the Negotiated Major Project Module), delivered by Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) in collaboration with Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley (HIOTV), is designed for healthcare professionals who are currently in, or aspiring to take on, leadership and transformation roles.

This module equips participants with the skills and confidence to lead and implement impactful change projects, while also providing practical knowledge on innovation adoption and change management within healthcare settings. Through the combination of theory, practical knowledge, and strategic insights, participants will develop deep understanding of innovation in practice and the tools needed to drive meaningful transformation within their organisations and the wider NHS.

Programme details

  • Enhance understanding of innovation within the healthcare system, including the definition of innovation and the essential elements for successful adoption.
  • Real world application: work on a project relevant to your organisation, ensuring direct impact and value.
  • Illustrate the broader context and demonstrate that your departmental issue may be indicative of wider challenges.
  • Support in formulating and approaching innovative ideas that benefit patients, staff and the wider NHS.
  • Teach a straightforward approach to writing an NHS business case, designed for NHS employees with no prior business case training.
  • Emphasis on the importance of a patient-centred approach and effective integration of service users, patients and the public.
  • Provide methodologies, theories and tools to advance projects and innovations.
  • Facilitate networking opportunities, connecting with like-minded individuals tackling similar problems and providing access to an alumni network that offers insights on overcoming obstacles.
  • Develop skills, knowledge and experience for successful implementation and widespread adoption of innovative solutions within the NHS.
  • Expert-led learning: learn from faculty and HIOTV specialists with real world experience of healthcare transformation.
  • Masters level 40-credit qualification which can contribute to further professional development.

Module components

The module runs over five weeks, combining online and face-to-face sessions, covering key topics such as:

  • Change management
  • Leadership and management styles and cultures
  • Managing self and people including equality, diversity and inclusion
  • The NHS strategic context for innovation and change including strategic drivers and facilitators of change in healthcare
  • The ‘PESTEL’ model (Political, Economic, Socio-cultural, Technological, Environment, Legal influences)
  • Research methods and improvement science methodologies and theories
  • Governance frameworks and ethical considerations
  • Understanding organisational complexity
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Collection and analysis of data/information
  • Evaluating impact, sustainability and knowledge exchange

Commitment required

The module consists of a total of six full days of face-to-face learning (typically from 09.30 to 16.30) – four in April, one in May and one in September 2025. These sessions will take place at Buckinghamshire New University’s Uxbridge Campus.

  • 9th April, 16th April, 23rd April, 30th  April
  • 7th May
  • 23rd July (optional final assignment review)
  • 10th September

Who can apply

Open to all NHS employees from all levels within the region covered by HIOTV: Frimley, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West.

BNU typically requires a first degree for admission. However, applicants without a first degree may still apply, as BNU will assess eligibility based on work experience and professional background.

Applicants must submit a justification statement (150-200 words) on:

    • Why they need this module
    • How it will support their goals and project
    • The expected impact on their organisation.

Enrolment fee

This module typically costs £2,650. However, if you meet the entry requirements and are selected, your place will be fully funded.

Further opportunities

It is planned to run this module twice a year, with a second intake in September. If you are unable to secure a place in the current intake, you will be considered for the next available cohort.
