In May 2025 Health Innovation Oxford & Thames Valley hosted a webinar on innovation in prostate surgery entitled ‘Improving patient outcomes through advances in surgical techniques, diagnostics and AI-powered decision support’. It featured an expert panel of senior clinicians and researchers from the University of Oxford and Oxford University Hospitals including Freddie Hamdy and Tom Leslie.
The session highlighted the impact of next-generation diagnostics, advanced surgical techniques, and AI-powered decision support in improving outcomes and minimising side-effects for prostate cancer patients. It covered:
- mapping prostate cancer – insights from spatial transcriptomics and 3D imaging, addressing the critical question of why some prostate cancers become aggressive while others do not.
- the PART Trial – a randomised controlled trial comparing partial prostate ablation with radical treatment for intermediate-risk, unilateral, clinically localised prostate cancer.
- intraoperative molecular targeted fluorescence imaging and its role in enhancing precision during radical prostatectomy.
- the TRANSLATE trial, a pioneering study reshaping prostate cancer diagnostics.
