Hundreds of healthcare professionals have joined webinars to help them provide better counselling support to parents facing up to the challenge of their babies being born too soon.
The proportion who said they were comfortable or very comfortable providing counselling in an extremely high-risk scenario doubled by the end of the first session.
More than 300 people attended these online sessions. Now many more have the chance to improve their skills by tapping into recordings of these sessions which were hosted by Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley (HIOTV).
Eileen Dudley, Senior Programme Manager for Maternity and Neonatal Patient Safety at HIOTV, said: “These important webinars are designed to help healthcare professionals improve their skills when talking to parents who are experiencing preterm labour and dealing with the challenge of their baby arriving earlier than planned.”
Positive feedback from the webinars included:
- ‘An excellent training session – best I have ever attended on this topic’
- ‘Brilliant reminder to reflect on the importance of active listening structuring conversations around the family’s requirements’
The webinars were delivered by clinical experts based at Oxford University Hospitals. They cover key elements of perinatal management of extreme preterm birth and are designed to increase health professionals’ understanding and confidence in preterm antenatal counselling.
