Improving repeat prescribing

Millions of patients in England receive their medicines through repeat prescriptions. This helps to ensure they have safe and timely access to the medication they need. However, recent research and feedback indicate that not all patients are receiving regular reviews of their long-term medicine usage. As a result, some people may be exposed to harm which could be avoided with improved monitoring .

Implementation of repeat prescribing toolkit

Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley (HIOTV) is working to improve repeat prescribing with our local integrated care systems: Frimley, and Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West. This programme focuses on supporting stakeholders to implement the new Repeat Prescribing Toolkit, jointly developed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). This is the first national good practice guidance on repeat prescribing in 20 years. The toolkit will help practices improve the consistency of repeat prescribing processes and provides training resources to support this.

Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West ICB

Tuesday 14 October 2025, 12.00-13.00 – registration link to follow.

Frimley ICB

In July 2025 HIOTV hosted a workshop for Frimley ICB to introduce the Repeat Prescribing Toolkit to GP practices and primary care networks (PCNs). This is part of our work with ICB Medicines Optimisation teams across our region. Clare Howard, clinical advisor and lead author of the toolkit, joined us to share the toolkit’s aim and demonstrate how implementing the toolkit could support practices to review and streamline repeat prescribing processes to improve patient safety and efficiency within the practice.
