Ryan joined Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley in September 2026. He continues his clinical practice as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust where, as Associate Medical Director, he established BRAIn, the trust’s research and innovation programme. This was built around a problem-first approach to innovation – starting with the challenges clinicians and patients face, and finding the right solutions to meet them. This initiative has supported innovations including an AI skin cancer diagnostic that has been rolled out across NHS South East and an ambient voice technology pilot. The BRAIn team won an HSJ Partnership Award in 2026.
Ryan co-founded the medical device company ASep Healthcare, whose first product, Tournistrip, has now been used in 85 million patient treatments worldwide.
Nationally, Ryan founded the Royal College of Surgeons of England Innovation Hub (I-Hub). He also sits on the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee and is Editor-in-Chief for the Royal College of Surgeons’ Bulletin.
